This is after Speaker of the National Assembly Justin Muturi declared the seat vacant following a Supreme Court ruling two weeks ago that nullified the election of ODM’s Mohamed Kolosh.

IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati in a gazette notice on Monday said any public officer intending to participate in the by-election should resign from public office within 7 days of the declaration of the vacancy.

Political parties have been asked to submit the names of their candidates to IEBC and the date of the party primaries on or before February 11.

“Following the declaration of a vacancy in the office of Member of the National Assembly for Wajir West Constituency vide a letter from the National Assembly Speaker received on Tuesday, 29th January 2019, there shall be a by-election for Wajir West Constituency on Thursday, 25th April 2019.”

“Political parties intending to present candidates in this election shall after its primaries resolve all intra-party disputes and submit the list of persons nominated to contest in this election to the Commission on or before the Tuesday, 19th February.”

“The Commission shall publish, in the Gazette, the names of the persons contesting in a party primary and the date of the party primary within seven days of receipt of the names of the candidates,” said Chebukati in the notice.

Kolosh lost his seat after KANU’s Abdirahman Ibrahim Mohamed moved to court to challenge his election as Wajir West MP.
