GROOTS Kenya Executive Director Ms Fridah Githuku says women are key in shaping the society and should be involved in all critical decision making by the government through public participation.

Addressing journalists in Nakuru on Friday during a sensitisation workshop for grassroots women from all the 11 sub-counties of Nakuru County organised by GROOTS Kenya in partnership with SDGs Kenya Forum on localisation of the SDGs, Ms Githuku stated that this can be achieved easily through implementation of SDG 5, which addresses gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls.

“We all know that these are global goals which our governments, internationally and even here in Kenya, must contribute to. Here in Kenya, we are saying women should be involved in all aspects of decision making” said Ms Githuku.

“The reception we have received from county governments is fine but there is more that needs to be done as far as citizen participation is concerned so that citizens can feel their views are taken into consideration,” she added.

Ms Wairimu wa Kanyiri from Molo sub-county lauded GROOTS Kenya for empowering women in the area.

She noted that she joined GROOTS Kenya in line with her economic activity of farming, adding that she has been able to grasp a lot hence improving her farming which in return empowers her economically.

“Our lives as women in Molo and Kuresoi have been transformed and we are able to earn through our economic activities such as farming. We are also actively involved in decision making,” said Ms Wairimu.
