The three-day conference kicks off on Tuesday morning after the official opening by Governor Nyong’o and will officially be closed on Thursday by Raila Odinga, who doubles up as the High Representative for Infrastructure Development in Africa.

The event being held at the Grand Swiss Hotel in the outskirts of Kisumu town intends to among others offer a platform to share experiences, challenges and lessons learnt in the quest for adequate and affordable housing.

The conference is being organised by various Organisations, among them Grassroots Trust in collaboration with the County government of Kisumu.

According to organizers, Kisumu City manager Doris Ombara is expected to sign collaboration agreements with various stakeholders who are willing to support the construction of affordable houses in Kisumu.

During a meeting with Members of the Press last Friday, Kisumu County’s acting Chief Officer for Lands, Housing, Planning and Urban Development Steve Gome said they have prepared a draft Housing policy.

He said that the policy contains a suggestion to have a Housing Fund to first track construction of affordable houses in the County.

“This housing fund is going to attract development partners to put some seed money into it and also compel the County government to do budgeting each year for housing development,” said Gome.
