Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i's secret game plan has caused confusions as the race for succession intensifies in Kisii and Nyamira Counties.
Buoyed by his incredible success stories at the national level, Matiang'i's trips to Gusii has given a hint of possible involvement in 2022 politics.
Already, a few politicians led by South Mugirango MP Sylvanus Osoro have fronted him to deputise William Ruto in 2022, an idea he's not keen with though.
"We have the potential to have a deputy president and am pleading with Ruto to work with Matiang'i," said Osoro.
But revelations that Matiang'i could be in talks with Borabu MP Ben Momanyi to have him sacrifice his gubernatorial bid may even change the dimensions.
Mr. Momanyi along with ODM treasurer Timothy Bosire are favourites to succeed Governor John Nyagarama.
"Matiang'i is in talks with Momanyi over 2022 and we could soon know the fate of the discussions," said a source privy to Gusii politics.
But Matiang'i's bid in Nyamira could backfire given that his ancestral home is in Kisii, a narrative that partly explains why he's gambling on the two counties.
A youthful politician close to the ministry said that he's trying to weigh the two counties before making a decision.
"His parents comes from Kisii and he stays in Nyamira. He is still evaluating options," said the politician.
Should he join Kisii race to succeed Governor James Ongwae, he is likely to meet Dagoretti North MP Simba Arati and his Kitutu Chache South counterpart Richard Onyonka among others.
