Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria has blamed the confusion in the political arena on the varying understanding of the 2018 truce between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) boss Raila Odinga.

Though well received and fully adopted by Raila's supporters and a section of those drawn from Uhuru's quarters, the handshake has been facing a high level of active opposition from Deputy President William Ruto's side.

Speaking on Tuesday, the vocal MP said that each side seems to be understanding the truce differently, and has varying expectations, hence the clash between the Raila-Ruto camps.

Kuria said that Raila's people, especially in his Luo Nyanza bedrock are in full support of the same under the notion that it will bring with it some leadership goodies, possibly Raila's presidency after the 2022 general elections.

"The Raila gospel, according to what people tell me especially in Luo Nyanza, the handshake means the following; the handshake means Raila will be President and Uhuru will be the Executive Prime Minister," he said.

The leader made the remarks during an interview on Citizen TV's News Night show on Tuesday night.

He observed that Ruto and team are on the other hand up in arms over the fear that the truce is intended to crush his presidential ambitions.

"The gospel according to Ruto and 'Tanga Tanga' is that the handshake was brought to put Raila into power and the handshake was brought to extend Uhuru's grip on power and the handshake was brought to stop Ruto from being president," he added.

On Uhuru's side, he said, the Head of State is simply out to ensure that Kenyans embrace each other in a bid to avoid future political conflicts.
