President Uhuru Kenyatta will officially exit State House in 2022 and the commander in chief and is keen on ensuring Kenyans elect a leader who will carry on with his legacy when he leaves power.
Among those touted to succeed him is his deputy William Ruto.
However, Ruto has a mountain task in his quest to become Kenya's president following increasing opposition from the Mt Kenya region. A section of leaders and elders from the region have rejected the DP's bid to succeed Uhuru.
So how can Uhuru smoothly and peacefully ensure that someone else and not Ruto succeeds him?
Uhuru on March 9th met opposition chief Raila Odinga at his Harambee House office in Nairobi. There were claims after the meeting that the two agreed to amend the Constitution to allow Raila to contest for the presidency in 2022.
Going by this claim, Uhuru is not threatened. He knows he has the man who has been his main challenger in the quest for the presidency on his side. Raila enjoys phenomenal support across the country and if indeed the Constitutional amendments sails through and Raila vies for the country's top seat, Ruto will be humbled at the ballot.
Raila's surest way to silence Ruto at the ballot would only be to pick a running-mate from Central Kenya and he would be good to clinch the presidency.
So what does the above argument mean?Uhuru is comfortable that with Raila on his side, he can, actually without investing too much effort, block Ruto from inheriting Kenya's leadership from him.
