Here are five Nairobi politicians who are likely to make headlines and shape the city politics in 2019.
1. Ken Okoth
The Kibera MP is among the most vocal city politicians to watch out in 2019 as well as 2022.
The MP is pushing for legalisation of Marijuana.
In September 2018, the Kibera MP wrote to the Speaker of the National Assembly Justin Muturi seeking facilitation for the Bill.
2. Miguna Miguna
The former Nairobi 2017 gubernatorial aspirant has remained active despite being deported two times in 2018.
The firebrand Canada-based lawyer was deported after officiating Raila Odinga’s swearing in as the people’s president.
He was deported despite the courts terming his deportation illegal.
The lawyer has vowed to return into the country insisting that he is a Kenyan by birth.
3. Mike Sonko
The Nairobi governor is among city politicians to make headlines in 2019.
The Jubilee governor is serving his first term in office and has several times clashed with city MCAs.
The MCAs have been hitting out at Sonko for allegedly running Nairobi county affairs from his Mua home in Machakos.
The County Ward Representatives are also piling pressure on Sonko to appoint his deputy.
The Nairobi governor is yet to appoint his deputy, a year after the resignation of Polycarp Igathe.
4. Esther Passaris
Passaris has been vocal on matters women rights and welfare.
She has however complained of being sidelined by Governor Mike Sonko’s government.
The Nairobi Women Rep is among politicians likely to shape city politics in 2019.
5. Babu Owino
Owino is among politicians to watch in 2019 on grounds that he has partnered with Uganda’s legislator Bobi Wine to push for the region's democracy.
In November last year, Owino held joint rallies with Bobi Wine in Kenya agitating for democracy and youth participation in governance.
The Ugandan authorities, however, banned the youthful Embakasi East politician from visiting the country.
