A video of the incident where the 35-year-old Winfred Mwende was being beaten by her husband on Tuesday went viral on social media causing an uproar among Kenyans.

Kobia, in a letter circulated to newsrooms, said Mwende, who is recuperating at the Makueni Level 4 Hospital, will be enrolled to the Ministry's socio-economic empowerment programme for financial support.

“We will link the survivor with the socio-economic empowerment programme in my ministry to ensure that she is economically empowered,” Kobia said.

The CS pledged to mobilize all the available resources at her ministry in conjunction with the security forces to have the victim's husband, David Nzomo, who was on the run, is expeditiously apprehended and dealt with in accordance with the law.

“We anticipate that he will soon be arrested. We shall do everything possible within our means to ensure that the perpetrator is prosecuted within the law,” stated Prof Kobia.

An amateur video showing Mwende's husband trading blows and kicks on her emerged online yesterday, attracting robust public condemnation that called for his immediate arrest and prosecution.

In the video, the husband is seen kicking and slapping Mwende, whom he accused of infidelity, indiscriminately as a handful of crowd milling around them watched the incident unperturbed, amid pleading with him (David) to reconsider his decision.

Nzomo was arrested in Makueni County on Thursday after police tapped his communication with the mother.

The mother said Nzomo had been sleeping in the bush for the last two days since he committed the crime.

The domestic violence meted on Mwende is not an isolated case.

In 2015, Jacqueline Mwende, aged 27, was assaulted by her husband, Stephen Ngila, 34, with a machete in Ilenge village, Machakos County for being infertile.

He mercilessly chopped off her limbs, almost leaving her dead.
