Sonko launched the facility on Friday.

The project, which is the first in East and Central Africa is aimed at decreasing the mortality rate among infants in Nairobi and its environs.

Pumwani maternity has a capacity of 150 baby cots with occupancy of 60 infants daily according to the county boss.

Of these, 10 to 12 babies are in need of donor milk.

"The project will help newborn babies who were born prematurely, have low birth weight or medical conditions or have no access to their mother's milk because the mother is either ill or died at childbirth," noted Sonko in his official Facebook page.

Sonko further urged health experts in charge of the project to ensure the safety of the donated milk.

"I'm urging health experts at the facility to ensure the donated milk is well screened and free from viruses that can be transmitted to the newborn babies," he added.

The Nairobi Governor lauded the British government for supporting the project and the Ministry of Health for providing policy guidance.
