Police officers behind killings at the Coast region will soon be arrested and prosecuted.
This is according to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji who said that he will form a team to investigate extrajudicial killings.
Speaking in Mombasa on Sunday after receiving a report by Haki Africa on extrajudicial killings, DPP Haji said that his office will work with the National police service adding that the team will be established in the next two weeks.
The DPP who condemned killing of people by police said that police officers should follow the law and not take matters into their own hands.
“As we fight corruption vigorously, we will also fight such impunity. If there are officers who are involved, they should know that this is not sanctioned and we will investigate and prosecute them.”
“I am concerned that this is happening at the coast and other parts of the country. The government does not condone such killings and if anything we should term them as extragovernmental killings and not extrajudicial killings,” said DPP Haji.
Haki Africa Executive Director Hussein Khalid handed the report to Mr Haji which had 34 cases of police shooting.
Mr Khalid said investigations need to be done and those behind the shootings arrested and prosecuted according to the law.
“We do not condone crime. We want actions to be carried out legally. The killings have been worsening and what we want is to find an amicable solution. Haki Africa fully supports the fight against crime in Mombasa, coast and Kenya in general, we are conscious that this must be done within the confines of the law,” Mr Khalid said.
