Nominated Senator Isaac Mwaura has opposed the push by some politicians to create more political seats.
Mwaura said the county has enough representation and that creating more seats will be overburdening taxpayers.
Speaking on NTV's AM Live show on Wednesday, the Senator asked Kenyans to reject the calls for a referendum if they will be centred on creating more seats.
He said that the referendum should focus on reducing the wage bill, creating an inclusive government and increasing allocations to counties.
“I disagree with people who are advocating for creation of more political seats because it will be overburdening Kenyans with taxes,” he said.
Mwaura, who was nominated after losing in the Ruiru parliamentary seat nominations, asked politicians to dialogue and reach a common positive stand on the referendum.
He also asked politicians to stop using the debate for Constitutional reforms as a 2022 campaign tool.
The lawmaker argued that referendum talk is likely to derail the country’s development agenda and deny Kenyans services.
The referendum debate has elicited mixed reactions among politicians, with a section of them arguing that it is not a priority.
Opposition leader Raila Odinga has been quoted saying that referendum is unstoppable and was allegedly part of his unity deal with President Uhuru Kenyatta in the famous March 9 handshake.
