Police in Homabay county are investigating an instance where a woman was murdered for allegedly taking part in the death of her young granddaughter.
The accused who has been identified as Siprosa Chiro is said to have met her death when she returned to Kanyamanga Village, after fleeing when family accused her of the death.
The girl aged nine is said to have been killed a year ago, before her body was found in her parents' home with mutilated genitals.
Confirming the incident, area chief Tom Ondiro said that the woman aged 59 landed in trouble when a witch doctor who was invited to solve the death puzzle implicated her as a party.
According to the chief, the witch doctor from the neighboring Tanzania was invited by the family of the slain girl, after which they banished the woman.
Upon her return, she explained that an irate mob of villagers descended on her with crude weapons.
It is not yet known who killed the girl nor the reason beyond the killing, a matter the chief said the police have since taken over.
Her body was moved to the Rachuonyo Sub-County Hospital mortuary, with the administrator now calling upon the public to cease taking the law in its own hands.
