Two Marsabit MPs accused of allegedly fuelling clashes in Marsabit County leading to the deaths of at least 14 people were on Tuesday released on bail by the Court.

North Horr MP Chachu Ganya and his Saku counterpart Ali Rasso were arraigned in court to answer to charges of incitement to violence after they were arrested on Monday.

The two legislators, however, denied the charges before Senior Principal Magistrate Kennedy Cheruiyot and filed an application to be released on bail.

The prosecution had applied to have the two detained for 21 days to allow the police to complete their investigations on the clashes in Marsabit adding that the MPs could interfere with witnesses if released on bail.

Magistrate Cheruiyot, however, denied the prosecution’s request and directed that the MPs be released on a cash bail of Sh250,000 or Sh1 million bond.

The magistrate said there was no proof provided before that the court that the MPs would interfere with prosecution witnesses.

Magistrate Cheruiyot further said that Mr Chacha and Mr Rasso had already begun reconciliation plans to end the violence in Marsabit and that the court wanted the process to continue.

The lawmakers were however directed to report to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations every week.
