Residents of Nyambera village in Kisii County on Wednesday discovered the body of a newborn baby which had been put in a sack and dumped near a river.
Members of the public led by Agnes Bosire and Eunice Nyaboke who witnessed the incident condemned the child's mother for committing the crime.
"We were alerted by a street kid who spotted the sack near the river in Nyambera area. Upon arriving at the scene, we were shocked to find a dead baby inside the sack," said Mrs Bosire.
Confirming the incident, Kisii Police Commander Martin Kibet said investigations have been launched to identify the woman who dumped the baby.
"The woman might have aborted and eventually dumped the baby. Police officers have launched a probe into the incident," said Kibet.
The police boss appealed to members of the public to volunteer information to police which will lead to the arrest of the suspect.
Mr Kibet called for calm and assured residents that the suspect will face the full force of the law once she is arrested.
The body was moved to the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital morgue.
