Several ODM leaders had boycotted the funeral in what could be their strained relationship with the controversial governor. Obado has been at loggerheads with ODM leadership.

Notably, only Nyamira Governor John Nyagarama and Homa Bay Deputy Governor Hamilton Orata attended the ceremony. Several MCAs also 'boycotted' the event.

Migori Woman Representative Pamela Odhiambo, Senator Ochillo Ayacko and all MPs among them Junet Mohamed, Paul Abuor and Mark Nyamita also snubbed the event.

"We must preach unity. For far too long, Nyanza people have been sidelined economically. I am however happy with the new approach following the handshake," Nyagarama said.

Mr Orata, who is holding brief for Homa Bay Governor Cyprian Awiti, said Nyanza people should concentrate on development rather than politicking.

"Elections are over. We must now look for ways of uplifting our people economically. Let's all support the handshake," he said.

But around 2pm, Mama Ida Odinga made entry to Migori when the funeral was midway. Mr Orata had to relinquish his seat for her as mourners cheered her in.

"I have come here to represent Raila who is away from the country. He told me to bring his condolences to the family and friends. We are sorry for the loss," she said amid cheers.

Mrs Odinga however, based her speech on development and peace, arguing that the country's peace should be a priority to every leader.

The deceased, Mama Eunita Awino, is the mother to Obado's wife Hellen Adhiambo. The Migori Governor is facing murder charges over the death of his girlfriend Sharon Otieno.

Also, EACC has been on his neck in recent months over alleged corruption. However, he has often blamed ODM for his predicaments, a move that has angered the party lieutenants from South Nyanza.

Last year, one of Obado's brothers had accused Raila of allegedly instigating predicaments the governor was facing. In May, Mr Odinga shared a platform with Obado at Awendo for the first time.
