Senior politicians organised and executed demonstrations against Deputy President William Ruto on Saturday in Nyamira, it has now emerged.
For several hours, demonstrators paralysed businesses along Kisii-N-Nyamira highway carrying placards reading 'Matiang'i must be respected'.
Dr Ruto had left Tente SDA Church for Gekano Parish in Kitutu Masaba when several youths gathered and started singing Pro-Matiang'i songs.
While Dr Matiang'i cannot be directly linked to the protests, a second serving MP and aides to two senior politicians planned and executed the protests.
An aide who spoke in confidence, said the protests were meant to scare Tanga Tanga brigade and Dr Ruto following frequent trips to Nyamira.
"We just wanted to scare them for a moment. They have been undermining local leadership whenever they visit. We wanted them to know that we are keen on what they are doing," he said.
A source says that money was dished by the aide to the second term MP. Also targeted were MPs Vincent Kemosi and Joash Nyamoko.
While Governor John Nyagarama and his wife Naomi sent a donation of Sh30,000, it could not be established why he chose to snub the event at Tente SDA Church where Ruto was present.
The DP said: "We know that they are being intimidated not to attend. He shouldn't be scared of these old tactics. Let him face the reality," he said.
Demonstrators went on to engage police near Sironga in Nyamira. MP Kemosi accused opponents of organising the demonstrations.
"You can't force us to support your bid for governor. Using threats to make us tore to the line is something that cannot work," he said without mentioning the names of politicians who organised chaos.
