Although they shook hands in Murang'a on Thursday, Deputy President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga's strained relationship was evident.

With Governor Mwangi Wa Iria guided by animosity between the duo, he had to breach the protocol by inviting Raila to address mouners at musician Joseph Kamaru's funeral even before delivering his own speach.

And while on the floor, Raila recognised most leaders by name including President Uhuru Kenyatta but tactically avoided mentioning DP Ruto's name.

Instead, he recognised him as 'deputy president' in his introductory speech contrary to his reference to those he mentioned.

When it came to Ruto's time, the DP, who has been at loggerheads with Raila in recent weeks, also carefully avoided mentioning Raila's name only reverting to the old tittle of 'former Prime Minister'.

In his speech, in an apparent reference to Raila's speech, he said he only met the deceased recently in open performances, adding that unlike Raila, he'd have only met Kamaru in churches. Raila had said that he met Kamaru at a certain Hall along Luthuli Avenue in Nairobi.

Mr. Ruto recently accused Raila of using the historic handshake with President Uhuru Kenyatta to kick him out of Jubilee, a claim the ODM leader denies.

On his part, Odinga accused Ruto of using handshake as scapegoat to quit Jubilee party.
