Kenyans have expressed mixed reactions after Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria posted a statement on Facebook calling for the suspension of foreign travels for MPs, arguing the development won't make Kenyan children go hungry.
Kuria in his statement argued that the suspension of the trips was necessary to cut funding especially at a time the country is facing difficulty because of the huge debts it has accrued over the years.
"Tell me one child in this country who will go hungry simply because we did not travel abroad," Kuria said in his Facebook statement.
"Let us ban all foreign travel for the rest of the 12th Parliament- except essential travel requested by and paid for by line ministries or other organisations," he added.
Kuria's remarks come after President Uhuru Kenyatta proposed the reduction of VAT on petroleum products from 16 per cent to eight per cent.
In his address to the nation on Friday, last week, Uhuru also proposed a cut on foreign travel, arguing that the country still faces huge financial gaps despite raising revenue through taxation on petroleum products.
“These cuts will target less essential spending like hospitality, training and seminars, foreign and domestic travel and other similar categories,” said Uhuru.
Kenyans joined Kuria's conversation, with some supporting the MP's proposal.
