A police officer on Monday allegedly shot and killed a man at Kegonga Market, Migori County.
The officer only identified as Kikwai allegedly shot Alex Omari Kimati after a disagreement during a game of billiards, popularly known as pool.
According to witnesses, the disagreement erupted on Friday at the Kengonga entertainment hall.
The officer who is attached to the Kuria East Divisional Headquarters reportedly vowed to deal with the deceased, and spent the next day trailing him.
"The officer had been roaming around the town, asking for the whereabouts of this man after their fight in a pool hall last week. He met the man here today and shot him," a resident told the Nation.
A section of locals noted that the officer used his riffle to shoot the deceased in the chest twice, killing him on the spot.
Confirming the incident, Kuria East Divisional Commander Ahmed Abdikadir, however, gave a very different account, terming Kimati a notorious robber involved in several assaults.
He added that the deceased was shot after resisting arrest and instead confronting the officer.
"The man resisted arrest and physically confronted the police officer. That is when he shot him," he is quoted.
But according to residents, the deceased was neither a criminal, nor did he attempt to grab the policeman's riffle as the police are alleging.
The body was taken to the Migori County referral hospital mortuary.
