Parents of Naftali Kinuthia, a man suspected to have hacked a Moi University student to death, paid him a visit at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret Wednesday morning.
The family members were accompanied by investigators to the hospital where Kinuthia is recuperating under tight security after he was attacked by a mob.
Members of the public descended on him after he brutally hacked to death Ivy Wangeci – a sixth-year medical student at the university’s School of Medicine.
Kinuthia’s father is said to have been shocked by his son’s actions and is still in ‘denial’.
“The father is still shocked. This thing has not sunk him on how Njahi did all this, this is our calm firstborn,” the suspect’s mother, Nancy Kinuthia, said.
Doctors at the MTRH informed the family that their son suffered a fractured skull after the attack by a mob.
The mother described her son as a hard worker who 'has been through a struggle to reach where he is'.
“He worked very hard and joined JKUAT where he graduated before getting a job in Nairobi. And they have been together (with the girl) even before he got a job and she joined school (of Medicine). This thing has disturbed us as a family,” the mother added.
