Former Nairobi gubernatorial candidate Miguna Miguna now claims that a huge percentage of money stolen from Kenya and stashed abroad belongs to seven families.
Reacting to a report indicating that Kenyans with massive wealth hidden in foreign accounts have defied an amnesty to surrender back the money to the government, Miguna accused President Uhuru Kenyatta family, among others, of holding trillions of stolen funds abroad.
The vocal lawyer also alleged the families of former Heads of State Daniel Arap Moi and his successor Mwai Kibaki were having massive wealth in offshore accounts.
"Kshs 5 trillion of public money has been plundered and stashed in tax havens abroad by Daniel arap Moi, Uhuru Kenyatta, their families and cronies, yet Kenyan politicians are busy taking selfies with Bobi Wine instead of protecting public interests - as their sycophants cheer," Miguna posted
The government, through Treasury Secretary Henry Rotich, early this year gave Kenyans until June 2019 to repatriate money stashed abroad which is estimated to be five trillion.
Macro Evidence and Implications for Global Inequality revealed that the amnesty has had little impact as only an insignificant percentage has been repatriated.
The National Bureau of Economic Research urged the government to introduce more incentives such as tax incentives for the wealthy Kenyans to return the funds home.
