The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has given temporary driving licenses to some matatus to travel upcountry in this festive season.
While giving the directive, NTSA Director General Francis Meja said that this was due to the increased travel demand by Nairobians.
Meja said that the licensing was based on merit of compliance with the agency's regulations and traffic laws.
He however warned that matatus found operating out of their designated routes risk losing their operational licenses.
The agency also urged Kenyans to report matatus involved in irregularities like hiking of fares so as to deliver appropriate punitive action.
This will come as a relief to Nairobians stranded in hoods like Kibera awaiting to travel upcountry.
