A rare incident was witnessed in Kisii town on Monday after street children hired by the county government of Kisii to smear faeces on protesting nurses.
It is alleged that Governor James Ongwae's government paid street children between Sh100-500 to disrupt the nurses' strike.
The nurses' chairman Mr. Fredrick Oigo condemned the incident saying Governor Ongwae should stop using force for the nurses to resume work.
"It is unfortunate that Governor Ongwae's government hired goons (street children) paid them to smear nurses who were holding peaceful demonstrations to push the county to pay allowances to nurses. Ongwae must know we will not be intimidated whatsoever. He will have no option rather than paying us allowances," said Oigo.
Oigo urged the county government to stop misusing street children but, instead ensure the street children are empowered to make a living out of their sweat.
"Paying peanuts to street children so that they can disrupt peaceful demos is shameful and uncalled for. Ongwae should empower street kids but, not using them wrongly," he added.
Peter Mogendi one of the street children revealed that they were paid money to chase and smear faeces on protesting nurses.
"We didn't manage to disrupt the protests yet we were paid money since the nurses threatened to attack us," he said.
