After Laikipia's Women Rep Catherine Waruguru was thrown out of a hotel in Kericho for failing to produce a marriage certificate, hotels that require patrons to produce such certificates as admission criteria have been in the spotlight.
The ethics of such requirements have been the subject of an animated national discourse.
Other than the Sunshine Hotel in Kericho, there are scores of other hotels that only admit married couples or individuals who can offer proof of marriage.
Such a hotel is the Hidigg Hotel located in the County of Garissa.
"In our hotel, we only admit people who are couples. We don't admit people who are not couples," Lucas Matara, the manager of the hotel says.
It is not clear how the hotel is able to prove that a couple is married.
