The 24-year-old defender, who was signed by Kenyan champions in January, is among the 18-member squad that is facing EPL heavyweights in Liverpool.

In various social media groups, Momanyi was projected as a 'mentor' to rising stars with pressure piling on the county to nominate him as a sports ambassador.

"Our very own Charles Momanyi will be stepping up for Gor Mahia. We wish him well in Liverpool. He's a diligent player and we expect a lot from him," said Elijah Okeyo on Nyamira Politics WhatsApp group.

Another user, Dennis Onyiego added: "I wish he remains in England for the next couple of years. He's got a talent."

The youngster is expected to feature in coach Dylan Kerr's first eleven selection after an impressive season that saw Gor Mahia lift KPL for the record 17 times.

Jacob Onsoti wrote: "This young man can be our ambassador. The county should do a it can to bring him on board for nurturing of talents."

Already, a number of dignitaries led by Raila Odinga have arrived in Liverpool for the Gor Mahia clash with Everton which is sponsored by betting firm Sportpesa.
