Chief Magistrate Martha Mutuku explained on Friday why she slapped two rugby players, convicted of rape, with a punitive 15 year custodial sentence.'
Reading her verdict, the magistrate linked the punitive nature of the sentence to the gravity of the offence that the two committed in February 2018.
She said that a sentence that would serve as a deterrent to prospective rapists was necessary, adding that the victim would leave with the scars for the rest of her life.
"In deed as submitted by counsel for the state, the complainant in this case was traumatised and will leave with these harrowing experience for the rest of her life hence a deterrent sentence is necessary," Chief Magistrate Martha Mutuku.
Frank Wanyama and Alex Olaba, raped the complainant in High Rise Estate after a night of merry-making.
She reported the sexual assault a day later and started a social media campaign to bring the two to justice.
The magistrate rejected outright the plea of the two rape convicts for a non custodial sentence.
This means that they will have to serve their time behind bars for their crime which is a serious felon.
Kenyans on social media reacted to the sentence in various ways.
