Deputy President William Ruto could be after all sending a message to his political rivals following claims that his relationship with President Uhuru Kenyatta is on the deathbed.
On Friday, the DP donned a cap with Yellow and Black stripes, resembling the trademark of his defunct United Republican Party which was folded in 2017.
The move could be a gesture that he's about to chart his own political path following President Uhuru Kenyatta's prolonged silence over his 2022 succession plan.
While URP may not surface again, Ruto's supporters have also been wearing T-shirts decorated in black and yellow, another indication that a new political outfit could be in the offing.
During the West Pokot trip on Friday, the DP however, narrowed his speeches to the promotion of unity, arguing that divisive politics were derailing the government's agenda.
“In 2017 people vied for different positions. Others failed but they have managed to secure different positions in the government. It’s time to focus on development and shun politics that aims to divide communities along ethnic lines,” he said as quoted by the Standard.
“Let us not go against the will of the voters who elected your leaders. We should respect each other in their own capacity,” he added.
Despite links to a possible exit from the Jubilee party, Ruto has in the past maintained that he will seek the party's ticket and that he will retire if he loses.
Several miles away in Kisumu, President Uhuru Kenyatta warned against early succession politics, adding that he's first determined to fix issues affecting Kenya.
