Deputy President William Ruto was in Western on July 20 where he held a series of fundraisers and launched development projects in the vote-rich region.
The DP who officiated a fundraiser at Kolanya Boys High School in support of the construction of a dormitory that was recently razed down by fire helped raise Sh15 million in less than five minutes.
The former Eldoret North MP who outlined the Jubilee administration's principle agenda for the region, especially in the education sector gave out Sh15 million in total.
From this amount, the DP gave his personal contribution of Sh5 million before he dished out another Sh5 million which he said was President Uhuru Kenyatta's. The other Sh5 million he gave out came from people said were his friends.
He said education plays an instrumental role in Kenya's development adding that government would do everything at its disposal to jack the sector.
"We will construct technical institutions in each constituency and reduce annual college fees from Sh90,000 to Sh50,000. Providing bursary of Sh30,000 and loan of Sh40,000 will attract new entrants who will acquire cutting-edge knowledge and benefit from a range of career choices," the DP said.
Kolanya High School dormitory was recently razed down by fire reportedly started by students.
The DP, besides the cash contributions also promised to give out Sh5 million to Teso North national school, Kolanya Girls High School and another Sh5 million to Bishop Sulumeti Girls. An extra Sh280 million, he added, would be channeled towards the upgrade of infrastructure at Alupe University near Busia town.
Kolanya Boys where the DP was is ranked among the top performing secondary schools in the former Western province.
