For better part of Friday, 2022 politics resurfaced as Western Kenya leaders and their Central Kenya colleagues allied to DP William Ruto clashed openly over running mate position.
The burial of Mzee Paul Kibet, father to DP Ruto's aide Farouk Kibet was smooth until former Kakamega Senator Bonnie Khalwale, now a chief campaigner of Ruto demanded that the DP appoints deputy from Western.
"We have over 3 million votes and we are the largest voting population. Western must front someone to deputise Ruto," he said.
But the remarks did not go well with Mt Kenya leaders who openly insisted that the region will automatically produce a running mate in the elections.
Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu insisted that Central Kenya will play an indispensable role in Ruto's bid, adding that they will not accept anything less than running mate position.
"We have numbers and let's not lie to each other. We shall produce the running and that is indisputable," said Waititu.
Senate Deputy Speaker Kithure Kindiki added: "Khalwale is out of order. He knows that Mt Kenya has numbers. It's us who will take running mate."
For all these time, Ruto sat quietly perhaps pondering hard on possible response to the fireworks precipitated by his allies.
In his speech however, Ruto seemed to dismiss Khalwale's idea, saying that 'Rift Valley shares everything with Kakamega'.
