Speaking to the media in Muhoroni on Tuesday evening, K'oyoo said that emissions from the factory have polluted water catchment areas and that the residents' health is at risk.

“The emissions from the factory have dangerously polluted the water in the residence putting the health of the residents at risk, besides”, said K'oyoo.

He added that a lot of chemicals emitted from the factory have polluted the air in the neighbourhood and urged the government via the concerned ministry and authorities to take appropriate measures quickly to control the situation before it worsens.

He also rebuked the management of the factory for what he termed low-quality assurance standards and urged them to act quickly.

“We have registered several complaints from both the public and the county government and, on that note, we have established poor compliance,” he added.

Concerns have been raised by residents that it was polluting the air and nearby rivers draining into Lake Victoria.

The residents in areas near the factory have been frequently complaining of the water they fetch being contaminated by emissions and the air being smelly and noisy throughout.

“It is a good thing to have a sugar factory in our area but they should put in place adequate waste management equipment, we are really persevering to live here, I urge the government to come to our rescue by doing something in time”, narrated Immaculate Achieng, a resident of Kibos.

Majority of the residents who spoke to Hivisasa highlighted of how the frequent smoke and other emissions from the factory are giving them sleepless nights.

Efforts to get comments from the factory’s management did not bear fruits.
