Angry residents in Kisii on Friday publicly caned a woman for allegedly hiding her son who is a wanted criminal.

The incident occurred at Nyachogocho village Kionduso, Nyacheki in Kisii County. Confirming the incident, area chief James Orina said the woman, identified as Beatrice Kerubo, has been hiding her son, Paul Onsombi, who is accused of being a member of a gang that has been terrorizing residents.“Onsombi broke into a shop in the area and robbed the owner Sh50,000. We have been hunting him down so that he can aid with investigations but his mother hid him in her bedroom. We raided the house and found him hiding under the bed,” said Orina.However, Onsombi, attacked Nyumba Kumi officials and escaped to an unknown place.The chief disclosed that the suspect’s mother was arrested and canned in public for failing to cooperate with authorities in the arrest of her son.“Parents should be at the forefront of advising their children to stop engaging in theft and other criminal dealings or they will be arrested. Kerubo was canned for lying to authorities that she didn’t know where her son went into hiding after a robbery incident,” he said. Orina added that the woman has until Monday to produce her son or she will be arrested and be taken to court.
