A suspected carjacker was on Sunday morning shot and killed by police officers in Naivasha following a botched robbery.

The suspect who was part of a gang that had stolen a vehicle was killed during a shoot-out with detectives from Gilgil Police Station.

Gilgil Sub-County DCI boss Joseph Thuvi who confirmed the incident said the gang of three hijacked a Nakuru-bound lorry that was ferrying electronic goods estimated to be worth Sh5 million.

The suspects were tracked from Gilgil after the vehicle was reported stolen and the police tracked the lorry around 6am in Karati, Naivasha.

Thuvi said one of the gang was shot after they defied orders to stop while the others managed to escape.

“One of the suspects was shot dead while his accomplice who was armed with a pistol managed to escape,” said the DCI boss as quoted by nation.co.ke.

Naivasha DCIO Kenneth Njoroge said the gang hijacked the vehicle while the driver was answering a call of nature near the Gilgil weighbridge.

The three suspects were armed with a sword, a pistol and a panga during the robbery incident and they used the driver’s dust coat to tie him up before driving away.

Njoroge said they managed to recover the stolen items adding that a man hunt has been launched for the two suspects who escaped as one is suspected to have gunshot wounds.

“We have recovered all the stolen electrical goods after combing the area near the scene of the shooting,” he said.

The body was taken to Naivasha Sub-County Hospital mortuary.
