A section of Garissa MPs is opposing the proposed 8% VAT on fuel and petroleum products.
Led by Ijara MP Sophia Abdi Noor, the lawmakers say that the proposed VAT will hurt Kenyans more.
The legislators also argue that the proposed budget cuts will hamper realisation of development in the region.
Speaking at Parliament Buildings on Tuesday, the MPs said that they will vote against the proposal.
“It is not in the interests of Kenyans and we will vote against it on Thursday,” Noor said.
The Ijara MP said that Kenyans are already feeling the economic pinch of the increased VAT.
“The VAT is not favourable right now and the president should have allowed for more consultations before coming up with the proposal,” Saku MP Ali Rasso said.
Mr Rasso said that Uhuru’s 8% VAT will hurt Kenyans more.
“We had proposed suspension of the VAT and I understand why the government is determined to impose it on poor Kenyans,” he said.
Other MPs opposing the proposed VAT include Qalioch Gufu (Moyale).
However, Garissa Township MP Aden Duale is among lawmakers supporting the president proposed VAT.
Others supporting Uhuru’s VAT on fuel are Garissa Senator Yusuf Haji.
MPs will vote on Thursday on whether to support the 8% VAT proposal.
