Scores of Iraqi protesters have attempted to storm the US Embassy in Baghdad in a bid to express their anger over an airstrike that resulted in the deaths of members of a local group.
Aljazeera reported that the irate protesters threw water bottles into the embassy and smashed security cameras as they shouted ''Down! Down USA!"
The US military airstrike carried out on was in retaliation for the killing of an Iraqi contractor by the Iranian backed Kataeb Hezbollah group.
According to media reports, the attempted storming of the US embassy came after funeral ceremonies for the targeted fighters were held.
"This entire funeral procession, consisting mostly of PMF members and their followers has entered through these gates without any resistance whatsoever from the Iraqi security forces that are supposed to guard the Green Zone," Simona Foltyn, a journalist based in Iraq, said as quoted by Aljazeera, speaking from outside of the US Embassy.
As a sign of their support, the protesters carried with them the flags of the Kataeb Hezbollah group which they hang on the embassy's walls.
Guards manning the embassy were forced to retreat inside as the protesters made their approach.
Iraqis have been taking to the streets to express their anger at the US airstrikes according to Reuters.
