Youths of Kisumu can be ranked among the brainiest in the nation after devising their own hustles which do need any formal training or licencing.
Here is how they do it.
1. Sports betting
Betting has become one of the most popular ways of earning among the youth.
This is despite the fact that returns are not guaranteed, but its arrival has seen the rise of perfect gamblers who always have something to smile about after each bet.
In Kisumu county, it is one of the income generating activities by some youth whose only job is to bet and await the results without having to toil.
2. Herding
In the interior of Kisumu, people are still keeping large herds of indigenous livestock, a practice that has seen the rise of professional herders in the region.
Charging a few shillings per cow per month, some youth are cashing in with their only job being collecting the animals from homesteads and driving them to the fields.
In the fields all they do is sit in shades and listen to 'Musa Jakadala' music on their radios as the animals graze and only get to get up when they go near people's homesteads and farms.
3. Rice guarding
In Muhoroni which houses the Ahero Irrigation Scheme, the youth are used to guard rice plantations from destructive birds.
In the job that takes slightly two weeks, one can earn a full sack of rice per every 4 acres, with the sack going for eight thousand shillings in today's market.
Their job is only to sit in temporary sheds made of reeds and whistle and shout 'shauuu!' to scare the birds away.
