An elderly lady in Kakola, Nyando constituency, is all smiles after villagers and well wishers saved her life as rains continue to pound different parts of the country.
80-year-old Mama Siprosa Atieno and her granddaughter have been living in a weather-beaten and partially destroyed hut in the village for the last 30 years.
However, the situation took a dangerous turn last Friday, after strong winds sent the house caving in, posing great danger to her, considering that the area is also currently flooded.
It took the intervention of villagers who immediately swung into action, and pulled down the house before erecting a new one immediately.
Among the well wishers is Monica Omondi who is a church minister at the nearby Lifeline Ministries, who says that she offered to hand over iron sheets meant for her project.
“I am running a small ECDE centre, and I had to sacrifice the iron sheets which I had bought for its expansion towards this course,” she was quoted by the Standard.
However, though grateful for the transformation, Mama Siprosa says that she was not shaken by the floods and was only worried about her granddaughter.
“I told my granddaughter to move away to seek refuge at the neighbour’s house, as for me I have seen it all in life and had nothing to fear,” said Siprosa who is partially blind due to age.
Ms Omondi said that so bad was the condition of the hut that she mistook it for an abandoned home.
"I asked neighbours if someone was in it and they told me there is some old woman there, and I was really touched,” she said.
