When the then political parties, The National Alliance (TNA) and United Republican Party (URP) joined hands and decided to work together, it was perceived that Deputy President William Ruto will support President Uhuru Kenyatta.
In return, Uhuru was supposed to support Ruto for another 10 tens years.
However, the political field changes every now and then. Political alliances can be formed overnight and once sworn 'enemies' become friends while friends become enemies.
Having been in the political field for a long time now, it is one's expectation that the DP is aware of this and he therefore he is seriously laying strategies for his 2022 presidential bid.
Since the handshake between Uhuru and Opposition chief Raila Odinga, many believe Ruto's 2022 bid is in jeopardy as the handshake might be Uhuru's endorsement of Raila.
On Sunday, the DP downplayed the issue of political debt that his supporters believe Uhuru supporters have and must be obliged to settle.
This is a clear indication that the DP is not relying on the current Jubilee party's political composition to seek for the presidency in 2022.
In fact, Ruto has been able to tour the country and form new friendships with leaders who were once his critics. For instance, his visit to the coast in June proved fruitful as some opposition-affiliated leaders joined hands with him and assured their support for him as the DP.
This is not something that can easily be dismissed. This might be a sign that Ruto has started laying the foundation for his 2022 bid. Similarly, Ruto might use the discomfort in the National Super Alliance (NASA), brought by the Raila - Uhuru handshake, to lay siege on all opposition strongholds and gain supporters there.
