Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has put on notice city doctors and nurses working in public city hospitals and who own private clinics and pharmacies.
Sonko says that there are reports that some doctors steal medicine form public health facilities to equip their private clinics and pharmacies.
The governor said that any doctor or nurse found operating private clinic will be sacked immediately.
The Nairobi governor said that his county his spending billions to equip hospitals with medicine which some rogue doctors are allegedly stealing.
“We have put in place a committee to investigate all doctors and nurses in public hospitals and whoever will be found owning clinics and pharmacies will go home,” he told journalists when he visited Pumwani maternity hospital on Thursday.
He said that it is shame that some doctors could be stealing medicine for their own selfish interests.
Sonko also said that his government will demolish pharmacies built close to county public hospitals and health centers in the city.
“We are not going to tolerate people who only value their interests at the expense of millions of Nairobian’s,” he added.
On Tuesday governor Sonko suspended county Health Minister Hitan Majvdia and county health director Thomas Ogaro over the poor state of health facilities and lack of medicine.
