Commuters have been told not to pay anything more than Sh20 to what they have been paying previously.

Speaking to journalists in Nairobi on Monday, Matatu Welfare Association chairperson  Dickson Mbugua warned saccos against charging more to what they have agreed on.

He asked commuters to report saccos that will ask for exorbitant fares.

“We have met and agreed on the standard increase which is Sh20 for matatus plying city routes,” he said.

Mbugua however said that matatus plying routes beyond Nairobi city will increase fares from between Sh30 and Sh50.

The Matatu welfare association boss said that they are consulting on longtime solutions on how to deal with the rise in fuel.

He said that the matatu sector is likely to cripple following the increase in fuel and other petroleum products.

The 16 % VAT on fuel was enforced on September 1 by the Energy and Regulatory Commission (ERC).

Pressure continues to mount on Treasury Cabinet Secretary (CS) Henry Rotich to reverse the fuel price.
