It has now emerged that Migori Governor Okoth Obado could, after all, survive the initially reported ouster attempt by members of the Migori County Assembly.

This comes amid revelations that the Assembly has since softened its stance on the man already facing a capital offence.

Obado was implicated in the murder of Rongo University student Sharon Otieno that happened on September 5.

According to sources attached to the Standard, the house remains divided on the issue, with a section observing it as a harsh move to impeach him.

“Let us not pretend. This matter is delicate. It is the Assembly that can save or finish the governor.

There are those who want us to send him home and others who feel that would be too harsh for a man serving his last term in office,” an MCA said as quoted by the Standard.

Despite his tribulations which have to some point portrayed the county in a bad light, Obado still commands support from a majority of the members in the house.

This, in turn, makes ousting him a tough task.

Among those advocating for Obado's ouster is the International Center for Policy and Conflict (ICPC), Executive Officer Wainaina Ndungu, who observes that he has contravened article 3 of the constitution dictating everyone to abide by the statute laws.

"We are demanding that Obado resigns from holding state office of Governor. A State officer shall respect the values, principles and the requirements of the Constitution," he said in a statement.

But this will be a tall order, considering that even members from the minority Kuria side have softened their stance on him.

The leaders are on record wishing him all the best as he fights to avoid conviction in Nairobi.

The team was initially championing for his ouster, to facilitate the takeover of Deputy Governor Nelson Mwaita, who hails from the Kuria region of the county.

Mwaita has since temporarily taken over and has been at the helm of the county operations since Monday.
