The ongoing succession debate is now posing as a threat to the realization of development projects.

Ukambani region has not been left out in the succession talk as famous politicians eye top seats in the much anticipated 2022 polls.

In Kitui County, the scenario is the same as political heavy weights eye to unseat governor Charity Ngilu. Ngilu is serving her first term in office and is expected to defend her seat.

The first-term governor’s leadership has been riddled with wrangles and tussles with Members of County Assembly (MCAs) who have refused to approve Kitui county's supplementary budget accusing Ngilu of overseeing a corrupt administration.

Ngilu has however rubbished the graft allegations.

As 2022 quickly approaches, the county boss is facing a headache from three politicians who are said to be eyeing her seat.

They are;

1. Gideon Mulyungi

The Mwingi Central MP has openly declared an interest for the Kitui gubernatorial seat. A fierce critic of Ngilu, Mulyungi has often accused the governor of failing on her mandate. Nicknamed ‘Tsunami’ the MP is determined to send the NARC governor packing in 2022.

2. Kiema Kilonzo

The Kenyan ambassador to Tanzania is also said to be eyeing Ngilu’s seat in 2022. Sources say Kilonzo is seeking Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s endorsement for the Kitui governor seat in 2022. He is a political veteran and has experience that could see him give Ngilu ‘sleepless’ nights in 2022.

3. Julius Malombe

The former Kitui governor is still a force to reckon with in Kitui political circles. Malombe is said to be strategizing for a political comeback in 2022. In the 2017 general election, he lost to Ngilu emerging third in the hotly contested gubernatorial race.
