A section of teachers from Nyamira County now wants Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i to spare eight students who allegedly insulted him last week.
Police in Siaya have already nabbed three of the students, even as President Uhuru Kenyatta backed the decision to have they disciplined.
Led by James Oteki of KNUT Masaba North, they have now challenged government to empower teachers to back guidance and counseling.
"It's pointless to charge those ignorant students. They might have done it out of excitements. Furthermore, no exam malpractices were detected during the said period.
"Young people should be guided accordingly and that can only be done through guidance and counseling," he said.
The students were captured in a viral video where they attacked the character of Mr Matiang'i and Amina, causing heated social media debate.
Ambira High School principal Thomas Odhiambo had positively identified the students, further dismissing allegations that the institution cheated.
Cases of examination malpractices were widely reported across Gusii region with at least 30 people charged in various courts.
