Indeed counties across the country have been dotted with diverse scenic features. Kamatich village in Uasin Gishu county has not been an exception. The rural village has been a spiking attraction to tourists but a deep misfortune and distress to the locals as they neither rear animals nor plant crops due to the nature of the area, rocky.

We visited the village to have a glimpse of the magnificent escarpment which is a sight to behold. We found the locals in a very tiresome chore, they were in a quarry. Women and children were not spared too in this masculine chore. They were crushing the rocks into small barbles using designed hammers.

"We solemnly depend on the rocks to feed our families and pay school fees because these rocks here cannot allow us to do farming," said Weldon, a father of three.

His wife who was also part of the team on the hard work said she bears the pains that come with quarrying.

"Sometimes you hit yourself or a rock rolls over hitting you but you have to bear the pain and continue as this is our food," she said showing us scars that were all over her legs and hands.

Kerich, a 55-year-old who has been harvesting rocks on his farm nearly all his years says they put food on his table. All his five children have been able to get the education through the sell of rocks which is always transported to various parts of the country for construction.

"My last born is in the third-year student of his studies while the rest have already completed their education," he said adding that although the task has been wary, it is been helpful.

From the torturous steep and rocky hills of Kamatich village, one can view the diverse county to the neighbouring Nandi county. However, the foot of the rocky hills inspires awe as a drop to the valley is obscured.

It was an adventurous experience and breathtaking looking at the horizon as if the earth meets the sky.
