Police have embarked on a probe into the abduction of two Cuban doctors working in Mandera County.
Police Spokesman Charles Owino has confirmed that the driver of the vehicle, which was ferrying the doctors, has been arrested.
He revealed that the doctors were abducted on their way to work. He also revealed that the vehicle has also been recovered as investigations gain momentum.
“They were abducted on their way to work and the vehicle that was ferrying the doctors has been recovered. We have arrested the driver who is currently being interrogated,” he said on Friday, as quoted by Citizen.
Preliminary investigation indicates that the abduction is a retaliation following the attack that saw one of their militiamen killed.
According to witnesses, the insurgents crossed the border to Somalia with the doctors.
The two Cuban doctors, Landy Rodriguez (a surgeon) and Herera Correa (general practitioner) had revealed that they were unsettled while working in the region before the incident occurred.
The incident comes after Kenyans raised alarm after a Kenyan doctor died in Cuba under unclear circumstances.
The government, however, assured the doctors of their security while working in the country.
