Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria has rubbished claims that there is a plot to extend President Uhuru Kenyatta's term beyond 2022.
Kuria said he is not aware of such a plot, terming the claims as a plan to derail the Jubilee government's development agenda.
The Gatundu South MP further noted that the President is focused on delivering his promises to Kenyans.
Speaking on Citizen TV on Tuesday, Kuria hit out at some politicians who he said are dragging President Kenyatta into the 2022 succession debate.
“The President is busy working for Kenyans and he should be given time to do his work instead of his name being dragged to non-issues,” he said.
Kuria further hit out at CNN journalist Richard Quest for asking President Uhuru Kenyatta whether he intends to extend his term beyond 2022.
The MP argued that the question was aimed at embarrassing the President.
“The president should not have answered that question on his retirement by the CNN journalist,” he said.
The vocal legislator wondered why people are concerned about whether Uhuru will retire in 2022 or not.
“The same debate we are having now never cropped up when Moi was serving and it also never came out during Kibaki's tenure,” he said.
A section of Mt Kenya MPs is said to be pushing for amendment of the Constitution to accommodate President Kenyatta in 2022.
The legislators argue that President Kenyatta is too young to retire.
President Kenyatta, however, maintained that he has no plans to extend his term.
“I am not interested. Even if such an offer comes, I will not take it," Uhuru told CNN.
