More than 50 families settled in over a 2000-acre piece of land in Mau Narok Njoro, Nakuru County are risking being evicted at the land that they have been sitting on for more than 80 years.
During a peaceful demonstration held on Thursday, the families said that the land was purchased by their forefathers more than 80 years ago and they currently possess the original title deeds.
“We have been here and even our forefathers were here since back in 1918 and we cannot allow our land to be taken away,” one of the families said.
Their attention came after a gazette notice dated March 1, 2019, which has been circulating in the area indicating that the land had new owners who are set to legally own the parcel.
They are now calling upon the National government to intervene saying they do not know any other place to call home.
The families, however, insist that they will not vacate their lands with the situation causing tension in the area.
Area Member of County Assembly (MCA) Jackson Githua also called on the government to intervene in the matter arguing that those who claim ownership of the land are not people known to the locals.
“The two families that claim ownership of this land are unknown to us and we want the government to step in and ensure the locals get justice,” he said.
This comes barely a few weeks after the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) acquired land that was grabbed in Nakuru County that was worth more than Sh600 million.
