Amidst the ongoing debate about contributions to the church, Deputy President William Ruto insists that he is a Christian and nothing will stop him from going to worship.
On Tuesday, Anglican Church of Kenya leader Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit faulted churches over harambees, saying that politicians should contribute silently to the church without publicity.
“Let us not allow Harambee money to become an indirect way of sanitising corrupt leaders,” said Sapit at a press function.
But in a rejoinder, Dr Ruto said nothing will prevent him from going to church to worship, adding that he's unapologetic about his faith and religious beliefs.
For years now, Ruto has been subjected to public scrutiny, with his critics questioning the source of his money. Usually, he donates millions of money to churches, a habit which makes his critics uncomfortable.
“Since Sunday school we learned to kneel before and worship God that’s the only reason we stand before men. We will continue to worship Jehovah with our hearts and substance. We are unashamed of our God and unapologetic of our faith. We are Christians first another title after,” he said.
ODM leader Raila Odinga has been critical of Ruto, at times questioning the source of his wealth. At Kisumu over the weekend, Raila accused some church elders of allowing money laundering in church.
“Some church leaders are true to their calling, others are not. We need to ask the source of the millions of money being taken to churches,” said Raila.
“We need to ask, if someone’s salary is Sh1 million a month, where do they get Sh5 million each week or between Sh15 and Sh20 million a month to hold fundraisers in churches?”
