The incident was confirmed by Kibwezi Assistant County Commissioner Vitalis Ogur who said that the boy was grazing cattle along the banks of the river before he was attacked by the animal which was hiding.

"A 15-year-old boy was on Sunday attacked by a crocodile where he lost his life as he grazed along the banks," said Ogur.

He said that efforts by residents who were around to save the boy bore no fruits as the crocodile jumped into the water.

The body of the high school boy was retrieved by KWS officers and the police and taken to Makindu hospital mortuary.

He urged residents to be vigilant and caution their kids against going close to the river to avoid such tragedies.

Residents have called upon the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) to find ways of taming these beasts that have proven to be a menace.

This is due to cases of human-wildlife conflict in Makueni county which have been on the rise.
