Inspector General of the police Joseph Boinet has dismissed media reports that Somali based militants are planning to strike Nairobi, for the first time in as many years.

Local media reports indicated that the militants, who recently killed two teachers in Mandera, were plotting to bomb Times Tower which hosts KRA and CBK, along with Treasury bulding.

But on Friday, Boinet insisted that the capital is safe, adding that Kenyans should not succumb to rumours 'being spread on social media'.

The police boss also said the country borders have been secured with security intensified in major towns to avert any terror threat which may arise.

Alshabaab like claimed responsibility of bombing Westgate Mall in Nairobi in 2013 September in which over 50 people died.

But since then, the terror group has kept off Nairobi, only striking bparts of North Eastern region, with Mandera and Wajir being their targets.
