President Uhuru Kenyatta’s recent remarks after his nomination of former Vice President Moody Awori into the Sports, Arts and Social Development Board seems to have angered a huge section of the youth.
Speaking on Thursday when he attended Kenya Commercial Bank’s Tujiajiri function in Nairobi, Uhuru defended the nomination of the 91-year-old, saying that he is tired of youthful thieves.
Uhuru was responding to condemnations from Kenyans who preferred a younger nominee for the youth-dominated sector, saying that the young people have proved their tendency to steal from the government in such capacities.
“If you see how young people we have trusted with positions steal public money, its rather I appoint somebody like Awori whom I am sure will protect your money to ensure intended developments and services get back to the people,” he was quoted by the Standard.
But in an interview on Radio Jambo’s ‘Mazungumzo Waziwazi’ Saturday morning, political analyst Brian Weke faulted the Head of State for what he termed disrespect to the young people.
He questioned Uhuru’s sincerity, wondering why he has suddenly changed after vowing to empower and consider the youth in all aspects during his campaigns before his reelection in 2017.
He bashed the President for generalizing the ‘thief’ title and making it apply to all young people, advising him to be more keen in his nominations.
‘’Yeye mwenyewe yuko ofisini maana alisema yeye ni kijana na atajali vijana wenzake, inakuwaje sasa anawaita wote wezi? Makosa ni yake kwa kushindwa kupata vijana wanaoaminika na ambao si wezi.
(What has changed in his initial pledge to empower the youth? He has to do his part by getting integrable young people and stop blaming the youth for his failure to spot good people),’’ said Weke.
